Your Help is Needed … Membership Research
As most of you know there has been a serious effort during the past year to evaluate the status of our church’s membership roll.  The goal for this project is to provide data for a more accurate representation of the current membership of Cedartown First United Methodist Church.  A committee has gathered information through various contacts, and this phase has been documented.  Now we turn to you as members of the congregation at large to help us “close the gap” even further.  You will find a list, of those who remain on our roll but for whom we have located no contact information, in the Gathering Room, Sunday school rooms, and the Fellowship Hall.  Remember, this is an effort to re-connect the church with those who remain as members.

Homebound Members
Attached please find a link to those members of our church who are homebound and no longer able to join us for worship and fellowship.  Many have given years to the church in serving, leading and teaching.  Please take a moment and send a note or card of encouragement or take time to visit if you are near.  Thank you for your care for our treasured Saints.

Help Needed
Cedartown United Fund and the Bagwell Food Pantry (Rome)
Last fall, we were approached to assist with a monthly delivery (every 2nd Wednesday) of non-perishable food from the Rome Bagwell Food Pantry to the Cedartown United Fund Center (about 2500-3000 lbs of food).  Our leadership thought we could undertake this outreach and we reached out to Kresge UMC and they agreed to split the months with us (they take the even months and we take the odd months).  Between our two UMCs, we are feeding Cedartown’s most vulnerable.  The food is loaded and unloaded for us.  It you have one hour and can be available with a truck and/or trailer to help, please contact Pastor Mike or the Church office.

Email Alert
We have learned that emails are being sent that appear to come from staff and members of the congregation asking for “a favor” or “assistance”.  While official church and personal emails have not been hacked, it does appear that an outside individual has created fictitious emails and is making requests.  Please do not respond to these emails requesting assistance.  Should you receive an email, please confirm before responding.  Again, our emails have not been compromised but we wanted to make you aware of this situation and the invalid requests being made.

Called General Conference UPDATE
Several have asked about news reports related to the United Methodist Church and a Special Called General Conference for February in St. Louis.  The worldwide United Methodist Church generally gathers every four years for General Conference.  This is part of the “Holy Conferencing” that John Wesley felt was so important for the Methodist movement.  Attending are elected lay and clergy delegates from all Annual Conferences around the world, Bishops and other special guests (we have an equal number of elected lay and clergy delegates from our North Georgia Conference that attend and represent us).  It is also during this same conference that our Book of Discipline is open for amendments and other legal procedures that occur within the life of the greater Church.

During the 2016 General Conference, a Commission For A Way Forward was established with 32 lay and clergy delegates for the purposes of meeting and proposing a way for the United Methodist Church to understand and move forward related to our understanding and response to issues of human sexuality, specifically related to Clergy, ordination and marriage.  A Special Called General Conference has been scheduled for next month to hear reports related to the work of this commission.  Also, three plans have been proposed for a restructuring of the United Methodist Church along with related amendments to the Book of Discipline.  These will be brought to the floor of the Special Called General Conference in February for discussion, vote and amendment.  At this moment, it is unclear as to what, if any, impact this process and vote will have on the United Methodist Church and our Annual Conference/Church specifically.  Two resources are available should you desire to read more about the issues and plans.  The book by Dale McConkey entitled “United Methodists Divided…Understanding Our Differences Over Homosexuality or you may go to our Conference website at www.ngumc.org/gc2019 for more related materials.

Financial Update & Pledge Campaign
Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!

We finished 2018 very strong and were able to meet our minimal budget requirements for 2018 including our Fair Share Missional Giving (Apportionments) and our District Work Fund.  Your faithfulness not only allowed us to finish strong for 2018 but enabled us to begin 2019 on strong financial footing.  Thank you!

We are currently working to set our 2019 Church Budget.  Your 2019 Pledge will help us plan for programs, ministries, staff and facilities as we move into the new year.  If you have not made your 2019 Pledge, please take a moment and complete a pledge card located in the Gathering Room and return it to the church office.  Your pledge will help us to build our program and ministry budget for 2019.  We offer several ways to give each week including the Offering Plate, Mail, Auto Debit, and Electronically.  For more information, please contact the Church Office.

Christmas Follow-up…

Thank you to all who made the Christmas Season at Cedartown First a huge success.  We were able to host four Christmas-week services with almost 500 in attendance (this included our Blue Christmas and two Christmas Eve Services).  This has been a great season in the life of our church and we want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make it possible and uplifting.

Thank You

Many thanks to Todd and Bussey’s Florist and each of you that helped in decorating our sanctuary and church for Christmas- from pulling out boxes and hanging wreaths to “un-decorating”, and packing up until next year.  It could not happen without your help.  Thank you all for giving of your time.

Being “Hope” Bearers

This past Sunday marked the beginning of Advent (the season of four Sundays preceding Christmas) with a worship celebration around the theme of Hope.  Over the next few weeks, we will focus on Love, Joy, and Peace.  For yesterday, we also considered our support of the church with our Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, and Witness with special attention on our Gifts when looking at our pledges for 2019 and how what we do as the church brings Hope to our congregation, the community, and the world.  The church family listened to a conversation between Pastor Mike and one of our youth, Abby Burris, returning from her recent Thanksgiving Break mission trip to the Dominican Republic.  The church was invited to bring 2019 pledge cards forward and place them on the altar (if you missed this opportunity, it is not too late to complete your card and bring it to the church office or email it to Reba).  All pledges are held confidential but help us in planning our 2019 budget.  We ask that you prayerfully consider the many ways God has blessed you and how He may be calling you to return a portion of that blessing by either a regular offering or tithe (10%) to the church.  Perhaps God is calling you to step up and give even more in 2019.  As always, when you give, you give unto the Lord and it allows the church to be a “Hope” bearer in our community and world.

NOTE:  When setting up your pledge, remember your gift may be brought to the church weekly or initiated with an auto pay from your financial institution to the church’s.  Remember, regardless of how you give, each year, we need an updated pledge card to load into our budgeting system.  Please contact the church office to set this up and remember our bank charges a small processing fee that is deducted from the overall amount of each gift (2%).

The UMW Annual Christmas Dinner is tonight, December 4th, at 6:00 p.m.  All of our church family is invited.  This is a special covered dish meal.  The UMW will provide meat, bread, and drinks; participants are asked to bring side dishes and desserts.  Harold McWhorter, well known gospel singer, will present a short musical program.

The UMW encourages helping Murphy-Harpst make Christmas special for their residents.  A special table will be designated for our gifts for them.  A Christmas wish list is provided by Murphy-Harpst and is available in the Gathering Room for those who are interested in helping.

We hope you will plan to join us on Tuesday for food and fellowship.

For those of us experiencing loneliness, sadness and loss, the Christmas season can be difficult – we can feel singled out by the programmed happiness of “the most wonderful time of the year.” But we are not alone.  You are not alone.  Many people experience as least some sadness and loss in this season.

Please come to a simple time of worship with reflection, song, and readings, as we acknowledge your loss and God’s hope for us and presence with us.  Our worship music will be led by Bellwether Worship from Rome, GA.  All Are Welcome, Just As You Are!

Fruit for the Samaritan Houson next Sunday, December 9th

Nothing can take the place of fresh fruit at Christmas time.  In this season of giving to others, we again have the opportunity to give fruit to the Samaritan House.  On Sunday, December 9th, we will bring our gifts of fresh fruit and place them under a Christmas tree in the Sanctuary. This fruit will be delivered to the Samaritan House the following Monday morning and it will provide a special treat for those who need food assistance at this time.  We hope you will give generously as we share Christmas joy with others in our community.    Let us be thankful that we are able to share with others during this blessed Advent season.  Cedartown First is a sharing and a caring church.

Christmas Cards for our Missionary Families

Let’s remember our two”homegrown” missionary families with Christmas cards from our church family.  Christmas cards will be available on the table in the Gathering Room and also at Fellowship Suppers, and there will be a bulk mailing.  You are encouraged to send Christmas cards, including a personal note, to our two missionary families– the Lyle and Diana Thomas family in mission in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Jonathon and Beth Brown Todd family in mission in Brazil.  Remember their children would really love to get their own cards.   Be sure to put a name on the outside of your envelope before placing it in the big envelope designated for each family.  If you prefer, you may choose the cards you wish to send, take them home to write a note, and return them to the appropriate manila envelope.

To make it easier for you, there will be one group mailing.  There is a large envelope for each family in which you may place your cards.  (Be sure to designate who the card is for on the outside of your envelope).  Our cards will be mailed on December 10th.

We are blessed to have these two families with ties to our church serving as missionaries for Christ and have included support of their ministries in our annual budget.  These cards will remind them that we appreciate, respect, and honor their mission work.

“Unwrapping the True Meaning of Christmas”

Image result for journey stewardship campaign

You are invited to gather with the church family this Sunday as we begin a journey toward “unwrapping the true meaning of Christmas”.

Each of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas is considered the season of Advent and a time when we reflect on the true meaning of Christmas…the Hope, the Love, the Joy, and the Peace.

Our journey culminates with our Christmas Eve services at 6 and 11.   This season kicks off with the first Sunday of Advent and Hope.

What Hope do you have this season?

What Hope do you have for our Church?

What Hope does our Church bring for this community (and would our community miss us if we ceased as a church)?

What Hope does God offer to us all?

This Sunday is a day of worship built around Hope and making a pledge to support the church with our Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, and Witness.  A key aspect of this is our pledge of supporting the church and her ministries for 2019 so that we can grow, the Church can grow, and ultimately, the Kingdom can grow.
(Pledge packets were mailed this last week and pledge cards will also be available this Sunday as a bulletin insert).

This Sunday will be special as our message will be different than any one you have experienced before as we listen in on a conversation with one of our Confirmands and newest members, Ms. Abby Burris, who has just returned from a mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

I invite you to come to the feet of Christ.  Prepared to be blessed and prepared to take that next step.

Peace.

Mike
