Our Annual Day of Giving for Murphy-Harpst is this Sunday, October 21

For us at Cedartown First United Methodist Church, our annual day of Giving for Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center is Sunday, October 21. Located here in Cedartown, Murphy-Harpst is a residential treatment center serving Georgia’s most seriously abused children. The core of Murphy-Harpst’s mission is to provide a safe and nurturing residential environment where severely abused and neglected children and teenagers can thrive and heal with a goal of re-engaging with society and leading productive lives. An agency of the United Methodist Church, Murphy-Harpst is an independent, not for profit organization committed to meet the needs of abused and neglected young people through residential treatment, placement in specialized foster care, and community programs that serve at-risk youth and their families.

Residential services provide therapeutic care to abused and neglected children in the Department of Family and Children’s Services as well as troubled youth in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The trauma experienced by these children causes severe emotional and behavioral issues that make safe living in home settings unattainable until intensive therapeutic services are provided. Many of the children have experienced numerous failed foster home placements. Many have been labeled as juvenile delinquents and are considered untreatable, but not at Murphy-Harpst. At Murphy-Harpst these children are provided with a structured environment where they can experience safely, security, and stability, often for the first time.

All residents have their own bedroom (often for the first time in their life) and the majority have a private bathroom as well. The residents live in “cottages” with other children of the same sex and age range. They have communal living spaces where they learn what it is like to live in a functional family setting. The staff works to create normal situations that kids would experience living in a community – birthday parties, movie nights, homework time, and bedtime.

Murphy-Harpst has a therapeutic recreation program that utilizes structured goal oriented activities to enhance and improve residents lives. This program provides many normal “firsts” most people experience growing up – learning to swim, riding pikes, dressing for prom, painting a picture, and being part of a team. A variety of therapeutic modalities are utilized including physical, social, spiritual, creative, and community-based interventions to teach life long leisure pursuits. The staff work to keep the residents as active as possible so they may lead independent lives after discharging. The motto is “Play with Purpose”. To find out more about this and other programs at Murphy-Harpst visit their website http://www.murphyharpst.org

State funding meets some of the essential needs of the residents, but donations are needed to provide the critical services that heal the children and allow them to achieve their potential. Our donations will help support vital programs such as equine and art therapy, education and technology, spiritual and character development, life skills and vocational services, and many others. Our gifts will go to help Murphy-Harpst continue these vital programs and change the lives of abused and neglected children and give them the life and hope they deserve. Please prayerfully consider how you will respond to this annual Day of Giving for Murphy-Harpst.

UMCOR response to Hurricane Michael
What can we do?

UMCOR partners have begun the local response in Alabama-South Florida, South Georgia, and Florida using UMCOR response trained teams and UMCOR supply network.  For example a shower trailer, water, and other supplies have been delivered to Bainbridge in South Georgia.  Some supplies have to be air lifted in.  Some of the biggest problems are a lack of power and a lot of debris.

“Early in and last out” guiding words for UMCOR and their partners.  In addition to trained response teams and supplies, each conference received an immediate $10,000 grant to help them with initial expense.

What can we do now?

Pray for those whose lives are impacted.

Make relief kits (cleaning buckets and hygiene kits) and send to relief supply depots.  We at CFUMC will assemble hygiene kits in early November.

Give money toward efforts of UMCOR and its partners.  Make your check out to Cedartown First and designate your gift for “UMCOR – Michael”.

Please wait for an invitation to volunteer.  Donate requested items only.
