We are finalizing plans for our 2018 Confirmation Class.
United Methodist Churches vary in the way they offer Confirmation, when they offer it, what age it is offered, what length of time and the make-up of the curriculum. Confirmation is meant to be a season in your child’s life that allows them to look carefully at their faith journey and to ask questions that are important to them. We also use this time to discuss the beliefs of the United Methodist Church and ways the local and global church does ministry. Confirmation is NOT intended to be a crash course for everything about Christianity nor is it intended to be a one and done experience. Confirmation is meant to “confirm” what the Holy Spirit has already been doing in your child’s life along with regular attendance in worship, serving, Sunday school, and UMYF (youth). Confirmation is intended to be a part of the overall faith journey of your child, moving alongside their experiences from Holy Baptism to now and encouraging them to be involved in the life of the local church. Over the course of our time together, it is our hope your child will gain a greater clarity as to who they are and who they are in Christ.
Confirmation is slated to begin in September and last 6-8 weeks on Sunday mornings. Following is a tentative schedule for the 2018 Confirmation Class at Cedartown First UMC. We will meet in various places but, primarily, during part of the Sunday school hour/Sunday afternoons, at the church and in the community. This experience requires intentional participation and will involve worship, a mission project, a team building outing and a possible overnight retreat. We will also offer an online self-paced component that your child will need to complete BEFORE our initial session and bring the certificate of completion. This will help us to integrate some technology into this experience (you can also register and do this segment as well and learn more about the UMC). We will also need some parent participation, especially as it relates to possible chaperones for off-site activities.
Prior to Confirmation … your child’s expressed interest in participation (will need the week of Sunday, August 5th)
Your child’s registration/login/completion of the UMC online component
First Sunday of Confirmation … launch
Sunday, September 9th … 9:30am
Weekly Confirmation studies that will involve class time, service projects, visits to other places of worship, etc. A detailed schedule will be available shortly
North Georgia Conference Confirmation Retreat – Camp Glisson, Dahlonega – Sept. 28th-30th (we may have late arrivals due to sports schedules)
Sunday, November 11th … 11am
Families and invited guests will have a seat front and center for this special worship experience while also standing alongside your child as they join the church. We will have a short church-wide reception following worship.
Following Confirmation, each confirmed youth will be added to the church roll as a full professing member of Cedartown First United Methodist Church and the larger world-wide UMC. If your child has not already been baptized, Holy Baptism will be a part of their Confirmation Sunday experience. For all others, we will celebrate a remembrance of his/her baptism.
If you have a child, 6th grade and older, who has not yet joined the church, please contact Pastor Mike and let him know as we do not want to miss your child for this opportunity.

Also, there will be a sign-out sheet for yard signs. I am sure with us all working together, this Flea Market will be the best one yet!!!
Parents – if you have a child currently in college or soon to be going in that direction, please send his/her name to the church office along with the name of the school and a current mailing address. We are beginning a new outreach to our students while they are away at school.

When we join the United Methodist Church, we agree to support the United Methodist Church and our local congregation with our Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, & Witness. Over time, as the church grows and lives change, we have noticed that a number of our members (those we have on our Membership Roll) have either moved away, joined another congregation or simply become busy with other things. We now keep a current Membership Book in the church office along with an electronic file that mirrors it. This helps us with mailings and emails.
Over the last year, we have worked very diligently to research our members and collect current contact information on each of them. This has been more difficult for some members than others. We have also assembled a membership task force to help in this endeavor as we reach out to locate our members. A big Thank You to Sara Anne Thomas and her team.
We are now entering phase three of this process which is to collect all of the information, create an updated membership directory (without pictures) and inquire of the church family as to the contact information and whereabouts of our remaining members so that we can reach out to them.
Over the coming weeks, we will make a draft directory available to the church family. We ask that you take a moment to verify your contact information but also take a look at the names of those we have lost track of. If you can help us with addresses, phone numbers or email address, we will do the rest. Thank you for helping us complete this important endeavor.
