Camp Meeting Style Worship in July

We are taking a bit more relaxed approach to worship this month as we are making slight changes to worship and encouraging the congregation to share favorite older hymns for singing in worship.  We will also be using the Cokesbury Hymnal which is one of the original song books of the United Methodist Church.  Our children will continue meeting for Children’s Church each Sunday, however; we will not have a Children’s Moment and will dismiss the children directly to Children’s Church right after the Morning Prayer.  This month is a great month to invite friends and neighbors.  It is also a great month if you have been considering church membership.  Please check with Pastor Mike if we can answer any questions you might have.

  • Sunday, July 15th, Rick Hall preaching and Bill Ellis serving as Worship Assistant
  • Sunday, July 22nd, we will be joined in worship by The Eighth Regiment Band and brass based out of Rome, GA
  • Sunday, July 29th is Invite-A-Neighbor Sunday.  We encourage you to reach out and invite neighbors and old friends to join us.  Before and after worship, we will have lemonade and cookies outside the Gathering Room door.

School Supply Project

If it is July then it is time to begin thinking about our school supply project.

This will be our 5th year of supplying basic school supplies for students at the four elementary schools in our area.  This year we are planning a change in our packing procedure based on suggestions that were made last year.  On Sunday, July 29th, will be the day that the school supply bags will be assembled and packed into boxes.  Different for this year is that the packing will take place in the Fellowship Hall where four assembly lines will be set up.  It is hoped that this will make everything easier and more efficient — from bringing in the school supplies through loading the assembled boxes for delivery to the four elementary schools that get these supplies.  This will mean that each of the Sunday school classes and our church family will need to meet in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, July 29th,  As you make your plans for this day, please know that your cooperation in making this church-wide project happen is most appreciated.

Polk Haralson CASA Training offered in Cedartown

The counties of Polk and Haralson have some of the highest foster care numbers in the state and when combined, represent one of the largest concentrations of foster children.  These children need a voice within the courts and you have a chance to be that voice.  CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is responsible for working with the children and the court system to ensure that their needs are met and their voices heard.  You have a chance to make a very real difference in the life of a child and their families.

CASA will be offering training and certification beginning August 20th with sessions held each Monday and Wednesday from 10am-1pm at their Cedartown office located in One Door Polk (next to McDonalds on Main Street).  The training is free and once completed, you can agree to be sworn in as an advocate and be assigned one or more children.  If this sounds like something you would like to learn more about, please email your interest to contact@polkharalsoncasa.org.

Pardon Our Dust

Our Trustees are diligently working to make repairs around the church facility including exterior drains, plaster walls, and exterior doors.  You will note that the Gathering Room door has been replaced with a temporary door which does not have a window.  Please take care in exiting as someone may be coming in.

College Students

Parents – if you have a child currently in college or soon to be going in that direction, please send his/her name to the church office along with the name of the school and a current mailing address.  We are beginning a new outreach to our students while they are away at school.

Church Safety

One of our goals is to provide a safe and clean environment for our children, youth, and congregation for worship and ministry.  We also realize that our world is in a changing climate and safety and awareness of our surroundings is vitally important.  We have undertaken several steps including including facility and grounds maintenance, lighting, and requiring Background Checks on all adults working with the nursery, children, and youth.  We have also taken the additional steps, in relation to recent acts of violence, to secure the church building once worship has begun.  Our Fellowship Hall door is secured once Sunday school begins at 10am and our Gathering Room door is secured at 11:15am and after worship has begun.  Should you arrive late, please enter through the Wissahickon Avenue main doors where a member of our Usher team will be present.  While we apologize for this inconvenience, we do appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Summer Giving

We realize the summer months are upon us and our families are on the go with vacations, trips, sports, etc.  Please remember that the needs of the church continue during this season as well and your financial support allows us to continue the ministry work with which we have been tasked.  If you are unable to be with us each Sunday, please make arrangements with our church office so that we can continue to count on your financial support.  If you would like to set-up automated giving, please contact Reba Roberts, Financial Secretary at 770.748.4731 extension 2, and she can help you take those important steps.
