UMCOR Sunday will be on March 25th

For us at Cedartown First UMC, UMCOR Sunday will be celebrated on March 25th.  UMCOR is the United Methodist Committee oRelief.

UMCOR Sunday is a crucial Sunday for us because it is a day we come together to empower our disaster relief arm of Global Ministries, UMCOR, for an entire year. If you remember:

•  When hurricanes Harvey, Maria, & Irma slammed Texas, Louisiana, Florida, & Puerto Rico in 2017, UMCOR was there.

•  When wildfires ravaged thousands of homes in the West & Southeast, UMCOR was there.

•  When refugees & migrants around the world needed help, UMCOR was there.

•  When a mudslide in Sierra Leone killed more than 500 people & destroyed 2,000 homes, UMCOR was there.

They were there because of UMCOR Sunday.

This Special Sunday covers the operating costs of UMCOR, which allows the relief agency to be where it needs to be, when it needs to be there, for as long as it needs to be there. It allows UMCOR to funnel earmarked donations directly to the designated project.

Our donations on UMCOR Sunday will help make sure that UMCOR can go wherever people are in a critical need.  Please prayerfully consider how you will support the work of UMCOR on March 25th.

Grow Day Camp
The incredible Camp Glisson experience is coming to Cedartown and Cedartown First, along with Kresge UMC.  We will be working together to offer this week-long experience, July 2nd – 6th.  While not meant to replace the existing opportunity for our children and youth to attend Camp Glisson during the summer (our children and youth need to go ahead and register for Camp Glisson), the GROW Day Camp is hosted at the local church as a way to connect with the community and to allow children to participate in a camp experience similar to Camp Glisson (not including overnight accommodations) and who would otherwise not have the opportunity or means to do so.
When you think of GROW Day Camp in Cedartown, think of archery on the lawn, climbing trees, bible study, life groups, Big Springs outing, Peeks Park outing, hiking, games, worship, and so much more.  We simply have an opportunity to show off the best of Cedartown (and our churches) and Camp Glisson brings its best, in the way of staff and equipment, to make it happen (we will host this staff during their week here).  We know this will be a life changing event and one that we can invite children (rising 1st – 6th graders) from our church, our community, the schools and Murphy-Harpst to participate.  There will even be opportunities for us to scholarship a portion of the camp registration fee ($135) which covers all meals, activities and expenses.  The Cedartown GROW Day Camp will run Monday – Thursday9-5:30 and Friday 9-12:30 with a closing celebration and Holy Communion.
We truly will have a chance to impact our community in a powerful way.  Registration has not opened yet but we wanted to provide this link so that you could watch the video and read more about it.  Please join us in praying about this now as we prepare for an exciting summer in Cedartown.

Who Am I … a Spotlight on Our Staff

We have a gifted and talented team that is passionate about what they do and desire to serve our congregation and community through the church.  Please take a moment and say “thank you” to our staff and pray for our staff each week.  This week, we would like to introduce you to Joe Colquitt who serves as our Director of Student Ministries.
Joe Colquitt.jpg
My name is Joe Colquitt and I serve as the Director of Student Ministries (focusing on youth).  I started working at First Methodist April 1st of 2012 and also work full-time at the Cedartown Recreation Department as assistant director where I am over all Youth Sports for the City of Cedartown.  My wife is Hannah, daughter of Danny and Jane Brown.  In my spare time, I love to play with my son, Harrison Colquitt, who is everyone’s favorite “Buddy.”  I grew up in Cedartown and was very active in sports and drama throughout my school career.  I went on to play football for Shorter University where I graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration with an emphasis on Sports Management.  I am driven to make a positive impact on young people’s lives and to do my best for the Lord.

Changes to our Nursery Ministry at Cedartown First
Wednesday Night has become a popular time for dinner and fellowship at Cedartown First.  It has also created the need for help with our Nursery.  Nursery is now offered from 6:30-8pm so that parents can participate in Bible Study and Choir.
Plans are underway for the decorating of our new Infant Nursery space next to the Sanctuary.  This space will allow our smallest ones to be close by while mom and dad are in worship.  A special thanks goes out to the Tots-n-Teens Team for their gracious donation of funds toward furnishing this space.  We are excited to see the place the Nursery Committee has for this space.

Improvements to our Wednesday Night Dinner Fellowship

As this ministry continues to grow and with the uptick in illnesses this past Winter, we are making several adjustments to keep you and your family healthy and safe while allowing for a wonderful dining experience.

Beginning this Wednesday, we will be serving from the long table located inside the kitchen, inviting our guests to enter thru one door and exit thru the other.  We are working to receive delivery of our prepared meals in a way that allows us to keep them properly heated and served.  We will continue to serve drinks and desserts at the outside tables.

We will be utilizing a team of servants for serving to limit the passing of possible germs via the serving utensils and to help control portions so that everyone gets a plate (we do ask that those who have been served once, wait until everyone has gone through the line before receiving seconds).

While this is meant to be a fellowship dinner in the church, we realize that some may need to take their meals as “to-go” due to other commitments.  We want to honor your time with us as well and ask that those desiring “to-go” meals wait until all who are dining in are served first and then we can meet your “to-go” needs.

It is our hope that these adjustments will continue to provide for a wonderful and tasty meal and fellowship experience with your church family.  If you are interested in assisting Mrs. Elaine with set-up, service, and/or clean-up, please contact her at reboring@att.net or  470.345.8889.
